The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has recognized Marikina City’s financial administration under Mayor Marcy Teodoro with back-to-back Seal of Good Local Governance (SGLG) Awards.

The SGLG is an institutionalized recognition-based program by the DILG that honors excellent governance by local government units (LGUs).

Marikina City received its 2nd SGLG for “upholding the practice of fiscal discipline and sustainability, and transparency and accountability in the use of public funds”, according to the DILG.

Aside from financial administration, the Marikina City government excelled in other assessment criteria across various governance areas, including disaster preparedness; social protection and sensitivity; health compliance and responsiveness; and sustainable education.

The city also met additional DILG criteria, such as business friendliness and competitiveness, safety, peace and order, environmental management, tourism, heritage development, culture, and the arts; and youth development. 

Marikina City will receive an SGLG marker and SGLG Incentive Fund to finance local development initiatives that support national goals and strategic priorities. Last year the city received a total of PHP2.3 million in incentive fund for winning the SGLG.

“Nagpapasalamat tayo sa DILG sa isa na namang SGLG award. Isa itong pagkilala na tama ang tinatahak nating landas sa Marikina: transparent at masinop, accountable sa tao, at inklusibo sa lahat ng sektor,” Mayor Teodoro said.

”Ang parangal na ito ay alay natin sa lahat ng kasama natin sa paglilingkod—sa mga kasama nating opisyal ng pamahalaan, at sa bawat taga-Marikinang nagmamatyag at nagangarap para sa maginhawang buhay. Andito ang Marikina LGU para sa lahat, at makakaasa po kayong pagbutihin pa natin ang trabaho pang maging mas level-up ang alaga mula sa ating local government,” he added.

In 2023, Marikina City received the Seal of Good Financial Housekeeping from the DILG-National Capital Region for its transparency and fiscal accountability in the utilization of public funds.

Additionally, the city was awarded the 2024 Kaagapay sa Kalusugan at Kapaligiran for Sewer Coverage Award by the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System Regulatory Office (MWSS RO) for its impressive 81 percent sewer coverage.

Marikina City bested Pasay City (48 percent) and the City of Manila (45 percent) for this award, which was received by Mayor Teodoro from MWSS RO Chief Regulator Patrick Lester Ty at the Marikina City Hall.
