Transport Network Vehicle Service (TNVS) drivers are expressing alarm over the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board’s (LTFRB) proposal to slash surge fees by 50 percent.
In a statement, the TNVS Community Philippines (TCP) warned that such a move would significantly reduce drivers’ income, especially during the holiday season.
It also expressed concern that the proposed regulation would negatively impact drivers’ earnings, given the high cost of fuel and the worsening traffic congestion in Metro Manila.
“The new regulations will greatly affect the income of TNVS drivers who have to navigate holiday traffic. We might even incur losses due to fuel, vehicle maintenance, and other expenses, especially since trips take longer due to traffic,” the TCP said.
The group stressed that surge fees are the only way for drivers to recoup their losses, especially during peak hours and on holidays and pointed out that the current surge pricing model is already compliant with LTFRB regulations.
“The surge fee is our only means to recover additional expenses, especially during the holidays. The surge pricing model and ceiling are in accordance with the regulations set by the LTFRB,” the TCP said.
The TCP urged the LTFRB to engage in a dialogue with affected drivers before implementing any changes. The group stressed the importance of considering the livelihood of TNVS drivers, who are a vital part of the transportation sector.
“We appeal to the LTFRB to conduct an immediate dialogue regarding surge pricing and its impact on drivers' livelihoods. We urge the agency to carefully study the policies they intend to implement, especially since thousands of livelihoods depend on every regulation they impose,” the drivers appealed.
