Let impeachment begin

Considering these developments and Sara Duterte’s various statements, I now think that impeachment is the only way to uncover the truth and allow her to defend herself in the court of public opinion.

There is a formal mechanism for holding public officials to account for misconduct, abuse of power, or violations of their duties. This mechanism is based on the principle that no one is above the law, which helps reinforce the rule of law in a democratic society.

Impeachment proceedings against officials who can be impeached are typically seen as a drastic measure reserved for serious misconduct. However, the conversation around impeachment has gained significance in the case of Vice President Sara Duterte, especially after she became involved in major controversies.

The recent events and allegations involving the Vice President have prompted some concerned groups, including religious and civil society organizations, to file the first-ever impeachment complaint against her this week. While impeaching a vice president is generally seen as unprecedented and potentially unwarranted, these developments have raised significant concerns.

In my 20 August 2024 column, I nearly defended Sara, arguing that impeaching the Vice President was unprecedented and possibly unnecessary.

Since then, a series of events has exposed the true nature of her mindset when provoked, which I find quite disturbing. She threatened to have the President, the First Lady, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives assassinated if she were to be killed first. The country’s security agencies, including the National Bureau of Investigation, regarded this as an active threat against a sitting President.

Considering these developments and Sara Duterte’s various statements, I now think that impeachment is the only way to uncover the truth and allow her to defend herself in the court of public opinion.

I have changed my mind. For the sake of peace and public accountability, Sara Duterte should face impeachment proceedings in the House of Representatives. It is necessary to hold her accountable as the second-highest official in the country, especially in light of claims of misconduct and abuse of power and her refusal to cooperate with investigating bodies.

Impeachment offers a valuable legal framework for scrutinizing politicians, ensuring that no one is above the law. This is essential in a democratic society, as it reinforces the principle that public officials must act in the best interest of the people they serve.

Impeachment promotes greater transparency in government. The process requires a thorough examination of the official’s actions and decisions, which helps reveal any potential wrongdoing. Additionally, it informs the public about how their government operates.

Many citizens feel disillusioned with political processes; impeachment could address governance questions, decisions made during the incumbent’s tenure, and policies enacted by the Vice President.

One significant advantage of pursuing impeachment is the potential to restore public trust in government institutions. Trust is a vital component of a functioning democracy; when citizens feel that their leaders are acting responsibly and with integrity, they are more likely to engage in civic activities and support government initiatives.

If the allegations against Sara Duterte are proven true through impeachment, addressing these concerns directly can show the public that their voices matter and the government is committed to accountability rather than ignoring misconduct. On the other hand, failing to address serious allegations may foster a sense of apathy and cynicism among the population.

Impeachment proceedings will allow Sara Duterte to defend herself accurately. This process enables officials to present their side and challenge the claims against them.

Giving an impeached official a platform to express her perspective and respond to allegations fosters a more informed public discourse, enabling citizens to make judgments based on a comprehensive understanding of the situation.

I’m confident that whoever oversees the impeachment proceedings will allow the Vice President to defend herself, ensuring a fair and just process.

Impeaching Sara Duterte may elicit mixed reactions, but the potential benefits are significant. A system that maintains the integrity of democratic governance and supports accountability, transparency, and public trust is always good for the country.

Let the impeachment proceedings begin.
