Baguio City will soon have two specialized high schools focusing on the arts and sports as the House of Representatives have approved bills establishing them for conveyance to the Senate.
According to Baguio City Rep. Mark Go, House Bills 7316 and 8700 were already transmitted to the Senate and awaiting the appropriate recommendations from the concerned committees for plenary debates and amendments.
HB 7316 seeks to establish the Baguio City High School for the Arts while HB 8700 also seeks to establish the Baguio City Sports High School.
Go said that the city's youth and even those from neighboring areas will have a place where their aptitude and skills in culture and the arts can be honed with the most conducive environment, facilities and curriculum.
He added that the establishment of the specialized sports-focused high school will enhance the city's identity as a sports haven.
The proposed sports high school will be administered and supervised by the Department of Education in close coordination with the Philippine Sports Commission.
The congressman explained that the sports high school shall implement a general secondary education, as prescribed by the pertinent provisions of Republic Act 10533 for students with considerable potentials in sports.
He added that the school curriculum shall place a significant emphasis on developing the athletic skills of the students through physical education and sports subjects.
Go hopes that the Senate would act on the proposed bills when Congress resumes sessions after the Yuletide break so that the proposed law will be submitted to the Office of the President for its enactment into a law.
