Borongan airport gets P200-M rehab

Passengers can expect Borongan Airport in Eastern Samar to improve its services this year as the air hub will receive a P200-million upgrade.
"The amount of P200 million has been earmarked in the 2024 General Appropriations Law to build up the infrastructure of Borongan Airport," House of Representatives Minority Leader and 4Ps Partylist Rep. Marcelino Libanan said in a media statement on Tuesday.
"The airport's improvement will facilitate the transfer of people and goods, and help bring in more tourists," he added.
Libanan represented Eastern Samar's lone congressional district for three consecutive terms before he was elected 4Ps Partylist representative.
200-meter extension
A year ago, Philippine Airlines began operating twice weekly Cebu-Borongan-Cebu flights, enabling travelers from all over the country to easily reach Borongan.
The airport is currently undergoing a 200-meter extension of its 1.3-kilometer runway.
"Our goal is to increase the airport's capacity to accommodate more commercial flights. We look forward to other airlines operating flights in and out of Borongan," Libanan said.
Borongan City is one of the country's top surfing destinations. Last year, over 150 competitors from across the Philippines participated in the Surf City Borongan Masters.
