The government should consider implementing energy transition as the calls for coal phaseout in the country are further mounting, a legislator said Monday.
The solon cited the need to enact Senate Bill 157 or the Energy Transition Act which is pushing for the legislation of an energy transition plan in pursuit of phasing out the fossil fuel plants and achieving net zero emissions by 2050.
He noted that the development of more renewable projects in the Philippines is seen to reduce power costs and ensure there will be a sufficient energy supply nationwide.
Parallel needs
The creation of an energy transition law must be perfectly paralleled with the commitment to efficiently phase out the use of coal as an energy source.
"Since the commitment to phase out coal is voluntary, there need to be sufficient policy signals that would provide an incentive for such action," he said.
Filipino consumers will mostly benefit once the energy transition plan has been established.
"An energy transition measure, which would effectively diversify the country's current energy sources, would provide the most benefit for consumers," the Senate member added.
