BAGUIO CITY– More than a day after ordering the closure of the beaches to avoid further drowning incidents in anticipation of strong water currents and waves, the mayor of San Juan, La Union lifts the directive as conditions so-called have changed.
In another Executive Order, San Juan Mayor Arturo P. Valdez lifted his earlier EOs regarding the closure of the beaches and a halting of water activities in the municipal waters. EO 23 series of 2023 of Valdez directed the closure of beaches and suspension of said water activities, his EO 23A series of 2023 meanwhile is a modification providing clearer guidelines for appropriate adjustments.
The earlier EOs were prompted by the anticipated strong waves and currents in the municipal waters, which will be caused by strong winds brought by amihan as told in the gale warnings of PAGASA where higher water levels are expected.
The directives also came after five reported incidents of drowning in San Juan, La Union.
The mayor stated in his latest EO that after carefully assessing and monitoring the situation, it was determined that the gale warning has been lifted and the level of the waves has been lowered, and that there is no imminent danger to public safety.
Valdez ordered that normal beach and water activities will resume. He also directed the police and concerned authorities and the establishments to be on guard to provide safety measures for the beach goers.
