Senator Christopher "Bong" Go gave a message of support to all Barangay Health Workers, emphasizing their crucial role and steadfast efforts in bringing health care closer to communities.
During the 24th General Assembly of the Davao City Federation of Barangay Health Workers Inc, held at the Davao City Recreation Center last Friday, 15 December, Go through his representative, committed to continue fighting for the welfare of BHWs throughout the country.
To address the needs and rights of these vital community workers, Go announced his filing of Senate Bill 427 or the Barangay Health Workers Compensation Act. This legislation aims to ensure proper compensation and benefits for BHWs.
Go's bill proposes to provide BHWs a monthly honorarium, along with a comprehensive package of benefits, including allowances, job security, regular training and skill development opportunities.
The proposed benefits are seen as an extension and enhancement of the existing benefits under Republic Act 7883, or the Barangay Health Workers' Benefits and Incentives Act of 1995, which already provides various incentives to BHWs.
The bill, if enacted, also extends benefits from key institutions such as the Government Service Insurance System, the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation, and the Pag-IBIG Fund.
The proposed legislation complements the already enforced Department of the Interior and Local Government-Department of Health Joint Memorandum Circular on BHWs.
Meanwhile, the senator coordinated with Mayor Mario Reyes, Vice Mayor Asian Manasee Palanca, and Tagumpay Barangay Captain Cliff Richard Astor to assist fire victims in Coron, Palawan on Thursday, 14 December.
The relief activity was held at Barangay Tagumpay Hall where Go's Malasakit Team, with the help of Puerto Princesa City Councilor Elgin Damasco, extended grocery packs, water containers, and balls for basketball and volleyball to 38 affected households.
Go emphasized the significance of Republic Act 11589, or the Bureau of Fire Protection Modernization Act of 2021. Primarily authored and co-sponsored by Go, this Act augments the BFP's proficiency through a decade-long modernization plan, including hiring additional firefighters, procuring modern fire-fighting equipment, and providing specialized training, among others.
