The House of Representatives will remain steadfast to make the price of rice at a low-cost amid disparities between the previously imposed price cap and the current price of the staple grain in the market.

In his speech at the Philippine Economic Briefing at Marriott hotel in Iloilo City Monday morning, Speaker Martin Romualdez vowed that the House will continue to mobilize efforts to provide Filipinos with the most affordable essential goods in the market, particularly rice, which is reportedly being sold beyond means.

"We will not stop until the price of rice is brought down to a level that ordinary people can afford," Romualdez vowed.

The House chief made the avowal in the wake of reports that the market is overflowed with varieties of rice that are priced at P50 per kilogram, making low-cost rice — whose retail price President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. had capped at P45 per kilo — rarely available.

The price cap on rice, enforced in September via Executive Order 39, intends to exert pressure on individuals or entities holding rice inventories to sell it at a reasonable price in hopes that this move will purge the supply shortage and price increase.
