The Armed Forces of the Philippines on Monday said it has "successfully neutralized" Abu Sayyaf Group sub-leader, Mudzrimar Sawadjaan alias "Mundi" on 2 December.
AFP Public Affairs chief, Col. Xerxes Trinidad, said the troops from the Joint Task Force Orion under AFP's Western Mindanao Command conducted a special intelligence operation targeted at the high-value individual at approximately 6:30 p.m. in the municipal waters between Barangay Banah, Tipo-Tipo and Barangay Lahi-lahi, Tuburan both located in the Basilan Province.
Trinidad said Mundi was killed while he was attempting to leave the island province.
"A traditional Muslim burial will be conducted while efforts are underway to contact any family members to facilitate the claiming of his remains," he added.
"The successful operation is a testament to the relentless efforts and unwavering commitment of our armed forces to ensure the safety and security of our citizens."
The AFP lauded the troops of the JTF Orion "who have displayed exceptional courage and bravery" throughout the operation.
"We commend their dedication to protecting our communities in Basilan. We also commend the unwavering support and cooperation of our communities in Basilan, whose vigilance and resilience have been invaluable to locate the whereabouts of the terrorist leader," the AFP statements read.
The military organization is calling on the remaining ASG members to surrender and avail of the government's amnesty program.
