The Philippine National Police said it will not tolerate cops violating traffic laws during the implementation of higher fines for the illegal use of the EDSA bus lane.
PNP information chief and spokesperson Col. Jean Fajardo said that just like anyone else the PNP is also governed by laws. If there are policemen caught violating traffic laws, she said, then they should be charged before the proper forum.
"The directive of our Chief PNP is clear that we will not tolerate any wrongdoing by our police and if they are caught then we will be the first one to encourage the MMDA to file the necessary cases whether it's criminal or administrative case, " Fajardo told reporters.
According to the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority acting Chairman Atty. Don Artes, around five cops were apprehended during the first day of implementation.
Artes warned motorists and riders that illegal use of the exclusive bus lane will receive higher penalties starting Monday.
Around 514 motorists were apprehended violating the illegal use of the exclusive EDSA bus lane on that date.
As of posting on Tuesday, the MMDA said the number of motorists caught for unauthorized passing on the busway totaled 107 including 42 motor vehicles and 65 motorcycles.
Under MMDA Regulation No. 23-002, the new fines and penalties will be P5,000 for the first offense and a second offense will result in a P10,000 fine, one-month suspension of driver's license, and participation in a road safety seminar.
Repeating the violation for a third time will also result in a P20,000 fine plus one-year suspension of driver's license, while a fourth offense will be a P30,000 fine plus a recommendation to the LTO for revocation of driver's license.
The fines will apply to both public and private vehicles that are not authorized to use the bus lane.
