Siargao, a popular tourist destination known for its world-class surfing, could be spared the same problems that led to the closure of Boracay in 2018.

In his speech at the International Surfing Cup in Siargao, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. urged the people of the island to adopt environmentally friendly practices to protect and conserve its still-pristine condition.

The President stressed the importance of supporting responsible fishing practices, buying sustainable seafood, and choosing eco-friendly cleaning and personal care products.

He also called on tourists and locals to support government initiatives aimed at the responsible development of Siargao, a tear-shaped island off Surigao del Norte in Mindanao.

He highlighted programs such as Training on Homestay Pilipinas, which educates local homeowners on accommodating tourists systematically and responsibly.

In addition to these efforts, Marcos said the national government is actively pursuing projects to enhance tourism and trade on the island, including the New Siargao Airport Development Project.

The President, in the speech read by his son, William Vincent,  called for the responsible promotion of Siargao as a tourist destination.

He described the annual International Surfing Cup as a catalyst for economic recovery and sustainable development in the region.

"Apart from showcasing the exceptional talents and skills of surfers, the cup aims to fortify the position of Siargao island as a prime surfing destination on the global map," he said.

The event celebrates the sport of surfing while serving as an opportunity for locals and tourists to come together and experience the rich culture and values of the sport.

"This competition reinforces the indomitable spirit of the people of Siargao," the President said, acknowledging the resilience of the island's residents in the face of challenges like the Covid-19 pandemic and the onslaught of super typhoon "Odette."

He reiterated the government's commitment to supporting the island's economic recovery and sustainable development efforts.

It may be recalled that in April 2018, then-president Rodrigo Duterte ordered the cleanup and closure of the world-famous Boracay, known for its powdery white beach, due to environmental degradation.

At the time, Duterte described Boracay, in the province of Aklan in the Visayas, as a "cesspool" and said the island needed to be closed for six months.

The closure had a significant impact on the local economy, but it was seen as necessary as Boracay was suffering from water pollution, sewage leaks, and deforestation due to its rapid and uncontrolled development.

Boracay reopened in October 2018 with improved water quality. It resolved many of its erstwhile problems, like establishments that encroached on the beach.

"Let us, therefore, unite as one to bring forth a greener, more secure, and more progressive Philippines for all," Marcos said.
