Ohio representative Jim Jordan gets another shot at filling the vacated speaker post in the United States House of Representatives with his nomination Friday by Republicans to become the leader of the lower chamber.
The chairman of the House Committee on Justice had been endorsed by former president Donald Trump but initially failed to win the party nomination at the expense of Majority Leader Steve Scalise.
The congressman from Louisiana, however, failed to get 217 votes from the full House to become speaker and dropped out of the race.
Republicans preferred Jordan, a darling of the right but a divisive figure in more mainstream circles, over Georgia congressman Austin Scott in the party' second internal nomination vote of the week.
Jordan beat Scott, 124 votes to 81, and will need to find support from another 90-plus partymates to win the vote in the full House.
The US conservative party has been in disarray since right-wing rebels forced out Kevin McCarthy, leaving the Republican-controlled House unable to address mounting crises including a looming government shutdown and US ally Israel on a war footing.
