Police arrested a Malaysian after trying to bribe lawmen in exchange for the release of a compatriot earlier nabbed in Taguig City.
Brig. General Roderick Mariano, director of the Southern Police District, identified the suspect as alias Jack Boo, a 33-year-old Malaysian national.
He was arrested for violation of Article 212 of the Revised Penal Code, which pertains to the corruption of public officials around 3:50 a.m. inside Taguig City Police Substation 1, in BGC, Taguig City.
Investigation revealed the suspect went to the Substation and attempted to bribe the arresting officers in exchange for the release of his compatriot, Malaysian national alias Chong who was arrested earlier for Violation of Article 151 (Disobedience to an Agent or Person in Authority) of the Revised Penal Code, resisting arrest, alarm and scandal, unjust vexation and oral defamation.
The police officers were conducting routine patrol when they encountered the alleged suspect outside the BBQ Restaurant, The Fort Strip, along 5th Avenue, BGC, Barangay Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City.
The suspect appeared to be under the influence of alcohol and was smoking in the parking area, which was designated as a no-smoking zone, prompting the policemen to approach the suspect and politely informed him about the no-smoking policy.
Instead of complying, the suspect insulted the officers by attempting to bribe them to let him continue smoking.
A security guard, who was also nearby, intervened and urged the suspect to stop and return to the restaurant.
When the police officers approached the restaurant management, they were given a warning and reminded of their responsibility to inform customers about the no-smoking policy.
Despite the officers' good intentions to merely reprimand the suspect, he became furious, went outside the restaurant, and started shouting curse words at the female police officers and the security guard. His disruptive behavior in the area led to his arrest.
The evidence seized from the suspect included bribe money amounting to P30,000, consisting of 30 of P1,000 bills. Consequently, aka Jack Boo was promptly apprehended by the complainants and arresting officers.
