The Metropolitan Cebu Water District on Tuesday disclosed that Cebu City may experience water shortage soon as the depletion of groundwater is causing saltwater intrusion to potable water.
MCWD spokesperson Minerva Gerodias said the primary cause of saltwater intrusion in aquifers is over-extraction of groundwater, making groundwater brackish or salty.
However, she reiterated that water extractions are being monitored to ensure that there are no over-extraction.
Based on a Japan International Cooperation Agency study, saltwater intrusion will reach Barangay Talamban in the city's north district by 2030.
Data from the MCWD, on the other hand, disclosed that Barangays Mambaling, Sawang Calero and Pasil in the south, north Barangays Ermita, Santo Niño, San Roque, Tinago, Tejero, Carreta, Mabolo and Kasambagan are already experiencing saltwater intrusion.
