What's with public servants nowadays? They have to go around town with a coterie of hangers-on and security details earning public scorn wherever they go.
One city government official usually goes out accompanied by an army of bloggers, office staff and security units.
He would explain that the documentation is needed for his being the leader of the premiere Metro Manila city to enable his constituents to keep track of his activities.
Really now! In contrast, other higher government executives can move about solo and even reach their destination without fanfare, some even riding a bike.
His videographers were quick to record every activity of the city officials however.
The vain official makes sure that only his best angle appears on television during interviews.
The official hails from a political clan the members of which now dominate his bailiwick.
A member of Cabinet earned the "disgust" of a well-known group for demanding something akin to special treatment "fit for a royalty" and even brought a lot of staff to the posh venue of the event which invited the official as guest speaker.
The source, who is the group's high-ranking officer, told the DAILY TRIBUNE his ire, not only for making them feel like the officials' servants but for bringing in a lot of her people as advance parties, making them shell out thousands of pesos for their food and other expenses.
"The costs are overwhelming because the venue was not cheap. Several of our members were there, and the official brought in about 20 people for a 30-minute speaking engagement," according to the source.
Also, what irked the group was that its officers were obliged to fetch the Cabinet member as if the functionary was the President of the Philippines.
"We were requested to be at the main entrance by the driveway of the posh club for a grand welcome. We have not done that in our entire lives. So irritating!" the group leader said.
Apart from that, the group leader said they were even 'fooled' by the government official who wanted to rush off after making the address because the Chief Executive was expecting the official in the Palace.
"A member of the staff spilled the tea and said it was not true that a meeting with the President was scheduled. It was the official's staff who exposed the lies to create an image of being someone special," according to the source.
