Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has revealed that its military has a homegrown long-range missile and troops who broke through Russian defenses in Zaporizhzhia are closing in on enemy trenches.
Zelensky said in a Thursday post on X that the weapon produced by Ukraine's Ministry of Strategic Industries can hit targets 700 kilometers away, Al Jazeera reported.
He issued the statement before Russian authorities reported the following day downing an unidentified object in Pskov, which is 700 kilometers away from the Ukraine border.
Another hint of the new weapon came from Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council Secretary Oleksiy Danilov, who said their missile hit a Russian air defense system in Crimea on 23 August.
The Ukrainian military also claimed on Thursday that units that captured Robotyne, a village in Zaporizhzhia, are advancing towards the villages of Novodanylivka and Novoprokopivka, closer to Moscow's sprawling network of fortified trenches along the southern front, CNN reported.
Ukrainian forces are conducting counter-battery operations, according to the military's general staff.
Meanwhile, the mayor of Moscow said Friday that Russian air defenses destroyed a drone approaching the city.
Air defenses near the Lyubertsy district on the southeast outskirts of the capital "thwarted another attempt to fly a drone to Moscow," Sergei Sobyanin wrote on Telegram, without naming an attacker.
"There were no casualties or damage, according to initial reports. Emergency services are on the scene," he added.
