An icon in the world of poker, Doyle Brunson passed away at the age of 89 last 14 May, leaving behind an indelible mark on the game. His unparalleled skills, captivating personality, and immense contributions to the poker community have cemented his place as one of the most influential players of all time. As news of his death resonates through the poker world, players and fans mourn the loss of a true legend.
"It is with a heavy heart we announce the passing of our father, Doyle Brunson," his family said in a statement, posted on Twitter by Brian Balsbaugh, Brunson's agent. "He was a beloved Christian man, husband, father and grandfather. We'll have more to say over the coming days as we honor his legacy. Please keep Doyle and our family in your prayers. May he rest in peace."
The Texas native also known as "Texas Dolly,"dates his poker career all the way back to the 1950's, extending seven decades and an impressive 10 World Series of Poker titles later. In 1976 and 1977, Brunson achieved an extraordinary feat by winning the WSOP Main Event back-to-back, truly solidifying his status as a poker icon. His strategic prowess and aggressive playing style revolutionized the game, inspiring countless players to adopt his strategies.
"I've said this many times before, but it bears repeating: We don't stop playing because we get old; we get old because we stop playing," Brunson said.
