Senator Christopher Lawrence "Bong" Go is urging the public to make use of alternative noisemakers to welcome the year 2023 even as he expressed support for stronger government efforts to prevent fireworks-related injuries.
However, the senator clarified that although it is discouraged, the use of fireworks is under the discretion of the respective local government units as he cited that several local government units already issued ordinances prohibiting private households from using firecrackers and other pyrotechnic devices.
On the other hand, fireworks display may still be enjoyed by the public in areas that are approved by the respective LGUs and are led by experts.
As chair of the Senate Committee on Health and Demography, Go likewise reminded Filipinos to continue observing minimum health protocols despite the ease in gathering restrictions, citing that the fight against Covid-19 remains and there are still threats of new variants.
He also stressed the need for everyone to remain cooperative and supportive of the government's pandemic efforts while welcoming the New Year to ensure public health and safety during these challenging times.
