The Philippine government helped the repatriation of more than 7,000 overseas Filipino workers since the start of the year, the Department of Foreign Affairs said Wednesday.
Most of the repatriated OFWs were from Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait, according to DFA Migrant Worker's Affairs Undersecretary Eduardo Jose de Vega in a public briefing.
"We also helped the repatriation from countries which didn't have many Filipinos but forced to go home due to local issues such as Sri Lanka," De Vega said.
He added that not all repatriated OFWs went home because of an emergency, as some of them were forced to leave their abusive employers and stressed that since the year started, no overseas Filipino on death row has been executed.
"The major accomplishment of our office is what we called the Legal Assistance Fund — which provides legal assistance to our fellow Filipinos," De Vega said.
He also cited the repatriation of Filipinos in Ukraine as one of the accomplishments of the agency in 2022.
