Despite the scheduled two-week maintenance shutdown of the Malampaya natural gas field in February, the Department of Energy on Friday assured electricity consumers in Luzon of a stable and sufficient supply.
At a press briefing on Friday, Energy Undersecretary Rowena Cristina Guevara said thin power reserves are expected in the dry months next year due to an expected influx of demand.
Based on the DoE's projections, a thin supply margin is expected to happen from April to July next year, and not in February when the Malampaya Deep Water Gas-to-Project will undergo regular maintenance shutdown for 15 days or from 4 to 18 February 2023.
"We can say now what months we will have thin margins, and we can see it's from April until June. We're looking at reserves for regulating, contingency and dispatch, and we see the possibility of yellow alerts in those months," Guevara told reporters.

The Malampaya maintenance schedule has been closely coordinated with the DOE and other stakeholders to ensure that Malampaya facilities and equipment operate safely and efficiently to avoid accidents that can impact the continuous gas supply to client power plants.
