The local government of San Juan City is giving cash incentives to student achievers who brought sporting and educational honors to the city.
San Juan City Vice Mayor Warren Villa said an ordinance granting incentives to students from both public and private schools was passed by the city council in 2021.
"All of our honor students and student-athletes will be given financial incentives," Villa said in an interview over the weekend. "We support these students because they are our pride here in the city of San Juan."
San Juan City has five local leaders who had been athletes, including Mayor Francis Zamora who used to play for the De La Salle Green Archers during his college years.
Former PBA players Paul Artadi, Don Allado, former MPBL player Ervic Vijandre and James Yap, who is playing again in the PBA, are members of the San Juan City Council.
"You know, some of our city councilors are athletes and former basketball players, especially our mayor who is a 100-percent athlete," Villa said.
