TACLOBAN CITY — Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Eastern Visayas disclosed that the waters of Matarinao Bay is once again found positive of red tide again, just two months after it was cleared of the toxic microorganisms that cause paralytic shellfish poisoning.
In its advisory, the regional BFAR said that seawater samples collected along the bay were found positive of the Pyrodinium bahamense, a toxic microorganism, beyond the regulatory level.
Matarinao Bay spans the towns of General MacArthur, Hernani, Quinapondan and Salcedo in Eastern Samar.
"To safeguard human lives, a local red tide warning is issued in this area as a precautionary advice to the public to refrain from gathering, selling, and eating all types of shellfishes and Acetes sp. locally known as alamang or hipon from the said bay," BFAR said.
The public has been advised to refrain from gathering, selling, and eating all types of shellfish and alamang from the said bay.
It added that the same advisory has been issued to residents and fisherfolk along Cancabato Bay in Tacloban City, Leyte town in Leyte, Irong-Irong Bay in Catbalogan City, San Pedro Bay in Basey, Samar and Guiuan, Eastern Samar where waters are still positive of the fatal toxins.
