Samar province’s power supply gets another boost from THEC

TAFT, Eastern Samar — A company specializing in renewable energy will be putting up a solar farm that can generate 80 megawatts of electricity and augment the power supply generated through clean and renewable energy source.
Benjie Picardo, president of Taft Hydro Energy Corporation said the company will embark on the solar energy project on top of its ongoing construction of its second hydro power plant by next year.
"The energy demand in the country has eclipsed the project growth," Picardo said.
He said the company's renewable energy projects are meant to help the country comply with international commitments in climate change adaptation and mitigation as required under the United Nations Conference on Climate Change.
Picardo said the solar farm will be constructed on an 80-hectare land in this town next year. He said the solar energy that will be generated primarily targets to supply independent electric cooperatives and will be connected to the grid of the National Power Corporation.
THEC, which is presently running a 16-megawatt hydro power plant in this town, has started the construction of another 14-megawatt hydro power plant in the same municipality which is targeted to be completed in September next year.
Last year, the Philippine government committed to the UNCCC a projected greenhouse gas emissions reduction and avoidance of 75 percent, for the period 2020 to 2030 for the agriculture, wastes, industry, transport and energy sectors.
