The Archdiocese of Manila through its social action arm, Caritas Manila, has initially provided cash and in-kind assistance amounting to over P1 million to areas in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao affected by severe tropical storm "Paeng," the Philippine News Agency reported yesterday.
"Church-run Radio Veritas reported Monday that the archdiocese has so far provided cash and in-kind aid worth P1,709,000. Of the amount, P500,000 was given to the Archdiocese of Cotabato, which was badly hit by the storm, where 70 people died," the state news agency said.
"It also provided P200,000 to the Social Action Center of the Diocese of Antique for the towns of San Jose de Buenavista, Sibalom, Hamtic, Patnongon, Laua-an, Belison, Bugasong, San Remegio, Tibiao, Valderama and Tobias Fornier that were also hit by the typhoon," it added.
Based on the report of the Antique Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Office, 7,506 families or 30,328 individuals were affected by Paeng. Meanwhile, the Archdiocese of Capiz Social Action Center and the Diocese of Kalibo in Aklan province each received P200,000 cash aid.
Aside from cash aid, Caritas Manila also delivered "in kind relief response" to the Diocese of Antipolo (269 manna packs worth P269,000 and the Diocese of San Pablo in Laguna (340 manna packs worth P340,000).
The Manila archdiocese is also preparing cash and in-kind aid for the provinces in Luzon that were also affected by the storm, the report said.
Earlier, Manila Archbishop Jose Cardinal Advincula appealed to the faithful to show compassion to calamity victims.
