The Federation of Associations of Private Schools Administrators is calling on the Department of Education to establish a bureau for private schools as an attached agency of the DepEd.
FAPSA chairperson Eleazardo Kasilag stressed that they have been badgering the DepEd for a private school bureau for the last 14 years as he alleged that DepEd has no office that handles the issues and concerns of the private schools.
Kasilag said that former Education Secretary Leonor Briones has previously acted on their call as the former DepEd chief established a Private Education Office with director Joyce Andaya as chair along with former DepEd Undersecretary Tonisito Umali.
"The PEO is created to take the lead in all matters pertaining to private education lodged in the Central Office pursuant to the DepEd mandate of reasonable supervision and regulation," a department order issued on 8 March read.
However, the FAPSA chair said that an office is not enough to address the problems of private school operators.
Kasilag also lamented that private schools are always regulated and sometimes, even punished but hardly assisted or sincerely helped by the government.
