‘Eat’ your milk tea!

The milk tea phenomenon is here to stay. It isn't going anywhere. Pandemic or not, people love milk tea, and they will keep ordering and drinking their favorite variants. This is why milk tea shops are everywhere. But must you always drink milk tea? Can't you eat it, too? Well, now, you can, with Poison Coffee and Doughnuts' new Milk Tea Doughnuts line. Always innovative and thinking out of the box, chef Sonny Mariano of Poison Doughnuts has turned three top-selling milk tea flavors into doughnuts.

"We see that a lot of people still love milk tea up to this day, so we decided to create three milk tea doughnuts. We chose the flavors based on the top sellers from popular milk tea brands," explains chef Sonny, who has, in the past, also whipped up creative doughnuts using soy sauce, cocktail drinks, and childhood candies.

The three flavors on Poison Doughnuts' Milk Tea Doughnuts line are Matcha Oreo Doughnut, Ube Milk Tea Doughnut, and Brown Sugar Milk Tea Doughnut, all priced at P120 per piece.

Matcha Oreo Doughnut is a sourdough brioche doughnut stuffed with rich matcha milk tea custard, glazed with matcha white chocolate, and coated on the sides with Oreo cookie crumbs. It was the first of the three to have been developed.

Ube Milk Tea Doughnut is a well-rounded doughnut that has both filling and topping — milk tea custard and ube halaya for the filling and ube chocolate coated rice crispies for the topping. The texture and the crunch of the rice crispies make a whole lot of difference when eating the doughnut.

Brown Sugar Milk Tea, one of the top-selling milk teas of major milk tea brands, has been transformed beautifully into a doughnut in Poison's Brown Sugar Milk Tea Doughnut. The delightful treat is filled with brown sugar milk tea custard and topped with torched salted cream cheese to bring the flavors together harmoniously. It is, according to Chef Sonny, the last recipe to be perfected among the three because he wanted to hit a balance.

"We wanted the brown sugar flavor to be evident but did not want it to be too sweet at the same time, so it took us about a week to finalize the formulation," says Chef Sonny.

Poison's new Milk Tea Doughnuts are available for dine-in and take-out at its store at the ground floor of The Alley at Karrivin Plaza, 2316 Chino Roces Avenue, Magallanes, Makati City, until 3 January 2023. It is also available for delivery via Tasteless.ph, Pickup.ph, Grab, Foodpanda, Pick-a-Roo, and Rider Ko.
