The Philippines and South Korea have discussed various ways to improve bilateral defense cooperation that includes the enhancement of the arms industry, people-to-people exchange and joint exercises.
This was announced by Department of National Defense spokesperson Arsenio Andolong following the virtual Joint Defense Cooperation Committee between the two countries on 19 October.
Andolong said DND Undersecretary Franco Nemesio M. Gacal and South Korea's Vice Defense Minister Shin Beom-Chul exchanged views on the security situations in the South China Sea, West Philippine Sea and the Korean Peninsula.
Both officials have also tacked the overall progress of the Philippines-ROK defense relations, including multilateral cooperation under the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
Shin Beom-Chul provided brief updates on the launching series of ballistic missiles by North Korea in the past weeks.
Gacal highlighted the defense and military engagements of both countries that have been sustained despite the restrictions posed by the Covid-19 pandemic.
The South Korean government expressed appreciation for the Philippines' continued support and call for the complete, verifiable, and irreversible denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.
The country also recognized the vital contribution of the ROK to the modernization of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.
