Economist-lawmaker Joey Salceda has asked the Department of Social and Welfare and Development to preposition relief supplies and other emergency support in Albay following heightened activity of Mayon Volcano.
Salceda wrote a letter to DSWD Secretary Erwin Tulfo after the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology raised Mayon Volcano to Alert Level 2 as it observed "increasing unrest" driven by "shallow magmatic processes."
"While the risk remains completely manageable, may we request your team's usual alertness and prepositioning of resources for possible mobilization should there be need for evacuation and relief," Salceda wrote.
"As in the past, evacuation from Mayon activity can be protracted and may require extended support from the government. I am confident that the Department, under your leadership, is prepared for such eventuality, as it has been during the competently-led relief operations for communities affected by recent natural calamities," he added.
The solon, however, expressed confidence in the DSWD's ability to deploy resources for Mayon, just as it did in the wake of the recent super typhoon "Karding," which battered much of Luzon, and the earthquake that struck Abra in July.

Salceda said that the province of Albay is "always prepared," but given the magnitude of the hazards involved, it also requires outside assistance.
