President Rodrigo Duterte on Christmas eve Tuesday joined the Christian faithful in “celebrating the joyous occasion” of the birth of Jesus Christ who, he said, “exemplified the true meaning of love, grace and selflessness to the world.”
“As we remember the true meaning of this solemn festivity, may we emulate Christ’s empathy and kindness by opening our hearts and extending our hands to everyone,” Duterte said, “especially to those who are less fortunate.”
The President said Christmas is a time to be sharing the “bounty and blessings we have received in the past year.”
“This season is a perfect time, not only to partake in our traditions, but also to reflect on the importance of family as the center of our celebration,” he said in a statement.
Mr. Duterte called on all Filipinos across the globe to be an inspiration to others through our small acts of benevolence.
“As we delight ourselves in the warmth of our loved ones, let us strengthen our bonds and deepen our relationships with one another. Together, let us rejoice in Christ’s compassion and celebrate our shared humanity as we steer our nation towards a brighter tomorrow,” he said.
“I wish everyone a happy and blessed Christmas,” the President said.
The President has declared a ceasefire with communist forces whose leadership reciprocated. Still a number of attacks on government personnel had been blamed on the rebels.
During the Christmas tree lighting at the Palace, the Chief executive, reminded Filipinos to be grateful for the many challenges that allowed everybody to grow better, not as individuals but also as one community.
President Duterte also expressed his gratitude to the employees of the Office of the President (OP) for demonstrating their unwavering commitment and the highest standards of professionalism in public service.
“Your dedication towards the work that you do is truly inspiring,” the President said. “Together, let us continue to secure a better and brighter tomorrow for each Filipino so that we can achieve our shared vision for a more united and prosperous nation.”
The 40-feet Christmas Tree, lit by the President at the Palace’s Kalayaan Grounds, is decorated with 1,235 lantern parols and 1,393 pieces of Christmas balls.
