Thousands of motorcycle taxi drivers are bound to lose their jobs next year after the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) ordered transport provider Angkas to lower the number of their bikers.
In a Facebook post, Angkas chief transport advocate George Royeca announced they will be forced to terminate the services of some 17,000 riders, lowering its biker population to 10,000.
“Sa halip na kami ay dagdagan, nagpasya ang LTFRB na bawasan pa ang Angkas bikers mula 27,000 hanggang 10,000 na lamang. That’s a compromise to the quality of service you can expect, and a direct blow to over 17,000 Filipino families,” said Royeca.
“Kahit patawa at balasubas kami sa social media, we prioritize the safety of our passengers and the welfare of our bikers, which will now become much harder to do with these new rules. The traffic in our thoroughfares is getting heavier each day, and there are more and more commuters to serve as time goes by,” he added.
Royeca also questioned the order, saying the Angkas drivers have proven their skills and have undergone proper training.

“Now, at our time of need, we humbly ask that you share this message and help our bikers keep their jobs. Help us #SaveAngkas so we and our bikers can help save you again every day,” the post read.
