ISOC-edotco, the birthchild of the joint venture between Malaysia’s Edotco and Philippines’ ISOC Infrastructure Inc., is set to construct 70 shared cell sites in several areas in Cavite province as part of its bid to boost the country’s shared connectivity.
Edotco Group CEO Suresh Sidhu said that the project will gear the country towards digital readiness and is optimistic that it will not only hasten internet connectivity but will also boost the digital industry.
“We’re edging closer to a vision of shared connectivity. It is helping the country develop its digital readiness, thereby creating a wise platform and uplifting the nation as a whole,” Sidhu said during the ground breaking of the first-ever common tower in Bacoor, Cavite.
The common tower firm said that it chooses a site for construction based on the suggestion of telecommunications firms and has picked Cavite because it fits the requirement set by Globe Telecoms.
“We started in Cavite because our customer looked for certain areas. They gave us a certain number of sites. In this case, it is determined by the requirements given by Globe,” ISOC-edotco country head William Walters said.
The construction of the shared cell sites will enhance the capacity of telecommunications providers and will give way to the entry of 5G connectivity in the country. The infrastructure will be a combination of ground-based and rooftop towers.
The company added that it targets the country’s three major telecommunications firms — Globe, Smart and Dito to invest in the project.
It previously signed a memorandum of understanding with Globe last September 2019 but it is still currently in talks with the other two companies.
The firm will invest $100 million in the next three to five years and targets to build 400 to 500 towers within the first year of operations.
The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), meanwhile, lauded the development, saying that sharing cell sites is advantageous for telco firms as it lowers their operating expenses.
DICT looks to release the completed common tower policy draft in the next two months.
