CHENGDU, China — Technology paves the way for economic development and China has been employing this concept as a tool to turn more provinces into smart cities. One such city is Chengdu where the government is offering a sustainable lifestyle to residents.
Chengdu, a province far from modern Beijing and Shanghai where most of the mainland’s urban development is concentrated, is making its way to the spotlight as the government envisions developing it as a showcase park city.

The entire development program is shown in the Chengdu Planning Exhibition Hall where people can be apprised of the Chinese government’s development plans for the province.
The development plan includes man-made lakes, irrigation facilities, construction of international airports and the setting up of road projects.

Mobile phones were also essential in the daily living of people in Chengdu. One of its examples is the use of mobile phones for sustainable tourism and transportation.
Chengdu boasts of roads overflowing with bikes that are rented out through a mobile phone app.
People rent the bicycles by simply scanning a QR code installed on each bike and paying for it through their load credits. After paying, the bike is unlocked for use to a certain destination.
Locals in Chengdu explained that the government has developed this to encourage people to use bicycles and public utility vehicles, such as bus, to reduce pollution from cars.
This will help in retaining fresh air and the preservation of nature which are part of the plan to make sustainable living possible.
