SAN JUAN, La Union — The Philippine surfers posted a 1-2 finish in the men’s open longboard division of the surfing competition of the 30th Southeast Asian Games Sunday at the Kahuna Beach here.
Roger Casugay, who was known as the surfer who chose to save a fellow competitor in danger of drowning than to beef up his chances for the crown the other day, was eventually given his due after emerging with a gold medal following a victory over compatriot Rogelio Esquivel.
Casugay topped the podium with a final score of 14.50 points while Esquivel submitted only 14.20 points.
Prior to that, the 25-year-old Casugay defeated a familiar foe in Arip Nurhidayat of Indonesia in the preliminaries.
