The Philippine men’s volleyball team pulled off a shocker when it escaped five-time champion Thailand, 17-25, 25-20, 23-25, 27-25, 17-15 in the semifinals of the men’s volleyball competition of the 30th Southeast Asian Games last night at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.
Down 13-14 in the fifth set, veteran Bryan Bagunas led the Nationals’ to a 4-1 blitz to seal a historic upset over the Thais and book a spot in the finals against Indonesia.
Bagunas, who is campaigning as an import in the prestigious V.Premier League in Japan, delivered 27 points while another power-hitter in Marck Espejo chipped in 20 markers for the Filipinos, who already secured their first SEA Games medal since 2005.
Middle blocker Kim Malabunga also provided spark with 14 markers.
