The National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Board has officially given the go-signal to start the P18.66-billion Davao Public Transport Modernization Project (DPTMP).
According to Department of Transportation (DoTr) Secretary Arthur Tugade, the modernization of the bus system will help spur and sustain development within and beyond the Southern Philippine city.
“The DPTMP will give Davaoeños and visitors a very efficient mode of transport as it maximizes service coverage that will accelerate economic growth,” Tugade said.
“Growth and development, after all, should cover not just Luzon, but also Visayas and Mindanao.”
To be funded through official development assistance (ODA), the project will include three components: Public Transport System Improvement, Institutional Capacity Strengthening, and Social Development Program (SDP).

Scheduled for implementation from 2020 to 2023, the DPTMP aims to provide an efficient and affordable mode of transport for Davaoeños through the delivery of a modern High Priority Bus System (HPBS).
Once operational, the HPBS will have 29 bus routes.
The HPBS or the project’s public transport system improvement component will involve the provision of hierarchical, interconnected bus services along major arterial roads, as well as an extensive network of feeder services covering the entire urban area.
With the HPBS, interconnected bus services will be prioritized along the 137 kilometers core network, and 489 km of feeder routes.
The project secured the approval of the NEDA’s Investment Coordination Committee (ICC) on 6 November 2019.
Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary and Infrastructure Cluster head Mark Villar said the DPTMP will not only satisfy the transport needs of Davao City but will also serve as a vital transport link to the rest of the region.
“The DPTMP is an important component of the DoTr’s vision, under the helm of Secretary Tugade, to fast-track growth in Mindanao through vital transportation infrastructure that is attuned with the administration’s ‘Build, Build, Build’ program,” Villar said.
