Indonesia frustrated the home crowd with a 25-23, 32-30, 25-19 win over the Philippines in the men’s volleyball event of the 30th Southeast Asian Games on Friday at the Philsports Arena in Pasig.

Despite the loss, the Filipinos still advanced to the semifinals after winning their first two outings against Cambodia and Vietnam.

“Our positive takeaways, for me, is we saw the lack of communication inside and we have to do better in improving it,” said coach Dante Alinsunurin.

“We fell short on our defense— in our blocking and in our floor defense,” team captain John Vic De Guzman added.

After close shaves in the first two frames, the match looked headed to at least a fourth set after a 16-11 Philippine lead anchored on Bryan Bagunas and Marck Espejo.

Former National University standout Bagunas then sent a crosscourt hit that kept the Philippines on top, 19-17.

But that proved to be the Filipinos’ last hurrah as the Indonesians finished off the match with the final eight points.

Indonesian skipper Wahyu Randu sealed the victory with a service ace, denying the host a sweep before a crowd of more than 6,000.

The Philippines will face defending champion Thailand in the semifinals on Sunday, with a win assuring the country of a silver medal.
