Angeles City — In constrast with the dominant display of their male counterparts, the Philippine Arnis women’s squad suffered setbacks save for the gallant effort of Jezebel Morcillo in the bantamweight 50kg and below category of the sport in the 2019 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games held at the Angeles University Foundation Sports and Cultural Center here Sunday.
Morcillo displayed poise and accuracy against Vietnam’s Thi Huong Nguyen in the finals to add another victory in the arnis competitions, increasing the country’s gold haul in the martial arts to five.
The three other Filipina bets — Erlin Mae Busacay in the welterweight division, Jude Oliver Marie Rodriguez in the featherweight division and Eza Rai Yalong in the lightweight division – were defeated by their respective foes.
Yalong’s loss came from a reversal of decision by the judges after a review of her match against Cambodia’s Veannsonita Si found an error in scoring.

Philippine Eskrima Kali Arnis Foundation (PEKAF) chairman and Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri confirmed the loss saying Cambodia’s protest has basis.
“Cambodia was hesitant to file a protest, but I told them to proceed with it and talk to the judges,” said Zubiri after the announcement. “I want to prove to everyone that the results of the game are not rigged and that the system works.”
The PEKAF chairman was referring to the video assist system which was implemented in the tournament for the first time.
