ALONZO Gee powers Phoenix past Blackwater.

Matthew Wright nailed a tough baseline jumper to power Phoenix to a 120-117 overtime win over Blackwater in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Governors’ Cup last night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

With the game tied at 117, Wright proved to be the right man for the job when he delivered the dagger in the final 1.2 seconds to help the Fuel Masters shut down their campaign on a winning note.

The Filipino-American gunner registered 20 of his 28 points in regulation and overtime while Alonzo Gee tallied 34 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists for Phoenix, which also drew impressive performance from new recruit RR Garcia.

The former Far Eastern University standout contributed 17 points and four rebounds.

“At least we ended our campaign on a winning note. That’s what my guys wanted, They said it was a retirement game for Doug (Kramer) and Willy (Wilson) will likely join the coaching staff,” Phoenix head coach Louie Alas said, adding that they will start their buildup for next conference on Monday.

“We have so many plans on Monday because we’ve been like this for two conferences. The bottom line is we’re losing so we need to arrest that. We have plans for sure. We need to make some drastic actions on what we can do as a team.”

It was a sigh of relief for the Fuel Masters.

They have lost four straight matches and the victory allowed them to exit the season-ending tourney with their heads held high with a 3-8 win-loss mark.

After knocking down a trey that forced overtime, 109-all, the Fuel Masters played catch up until Alex Mallari converted a layup that gave them a 115-113 lead.

Wright split his free throws for a 117-114 lead but Sumang knocked down a three-point play at the other end to tie the count at 117 with only 3.7 seconds left, setting the stage for Wright to play the hero’s role.

Import Marqus Blakely had 37 points, 17 rebounds and six assists on top of two steals and two blocks while Mac Belo registered 25 points and six rebounds for Blackwater, who finished the conference with a 2-9 record.
