Gilas Pilipinas head coach Tim Cone rued his team’s poor transition defense in their 89-93 loss to Alab Pilipinas Monday night, but welcomed the defeat as it will put his wards in the right perspective.
Fatigue took its toll on the all-professional squad in its second tune-up against Jimmy Alapag’s Asean Basketball League team but made Cone realized that it would not be a picnic come the 30th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.
“This is a step-back but I think this is a good step-back so we’ll understand how hard this is going to be. This is not going to be easy. This is a good message for everybody. And hopefully this is one step-back and two steps forward,” Cone said.
“This is a good test for us but we just hate losing; that’s all,” he added.
With two weeks left before biennial meet, the Barangay Ginebra mentor is still ironing out some things with his squad that is expected by everyone to win the gold medal in the SEA Games.

The injuries of Greg Slaughter and Troy Rosario decimated Cone’s pool once more, although he welcomed his latest addition in Kiefer Ravena, who replaced Jayson Castro.
Unlike in their 98-95 win over Alab in their first outing, however, Gilas were exposed with their flaws in their transition defense, something that Cone wants to improve.
“We’re not getting back well on transition. That’s really an area of the game we need to work on,” Cone said.
