MANILA — The tax on salty foods being pushed by lawmakers is supposed to benefit the public’s health. Making salty food expensive can deter the consumption of these food items and prevent people from developing heart, kidney and vascular diseases.
In the Philippines, these diseases are among the Top 10 causes of death among the population. So, it makes sense to reduce salt in one’s diet as too much of it could lead to hypertension or high blood pressure, which can damage the heart, kidney and blood vessels.
Of course, the House bill imposing taxes on food with a high salt content primarily aims to generate revenue for the government. The measure takes its cue from the tax on sugary beverages that was imposed earlier under the TRAIN law. The latter aims to deter consumption of too much sweet food to prevent diabetes, which is also among the Top 10 killer diseases.
However, the proposed measure may also raise the BP of consumers to be badly affected by the tax. These include poor families who can only afford dried fish for their meal. If they get angry when the prices of tuyo and daing go up because of the tax, their blood pressure will definitely shoot up.
Meanwhile, those fond of going out for drinks may also oppose the proposed tax as it would mean cutting down on sodium-laden chips for pulutan. As it is, the tomadors are already reeling from the sin taxes, which have squeezed their budget for liquor and cigarettes. Less salty chips may add sobriety to an otherwise spirited occasion.
