University of the Philippines (UP) achieved a historic feat when it bagged the twice-to-beat advantage of Season 82 University Athletic Association of the Philippines men’s basketball tournament.

And much of that success should be credited to its captain — Jun Manzo.

Manzo’s leadership and court brilliance were in full display in the last two games of the Fighting Maroons.

The 5-foot-9 court general from Cebu pumped in 14 points, four rebounds and two assists in their 80-77 win over National University.

Then, he stormed back, knocking down 11 points, eight assists and five rebounds as the Fighting Maroons sealed the twice-to-beat incentive and kicked De La Salle University out of Final Four contention, 71-68.

In fact, it was Manzo who delivered a beautiful bounce pass that led to Kobe Paras’ go-ahead dunk.

“We won because we made good executions down the stretch,” said Manzo, who was named Chooks to Go-Collegiate Press Corps Player of the Week.

“I have to give honor to them for being warriors,” he said. “Bright (Akhuetie) here, Jun there, and everybody else contributed for this win.”

Manzo eclipsed other top performers like Ange Kouame of Ateneo de Manila University, Rhenz Abando of University of Santo Tomas and Wendell Comboy of Far Eastern University for the weekly award given by newspaper and online reporters who cover the beat.
