House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano on Tuesday announced that the House of Representatives will be tackling bills regarding the franchise extension of broadcast giant ABS-CBN before the year ends.
Cayetano, in an ambush interview before visiting the inmates at the Taguig City Jail, said that the House will observe “fairness” and both sides will be heard during the upcoming hearing.
“Like any other hearings, the obligation of the House is one, to be fair, two is to bring out the real issues and three, to give the other side the opportunity to respond and to see who is right or wrong,” said Cayetano.
While there are issues with the media, he admitted that it plays an important role as agents of check and balance.
“There are issues that we have to tackle first, and foremost is the freedom of press,” Cayetano said.

At least six bills seeking the renewal of the ABS-CBN’s franchise are now pending at the committee on legislative franchises as of 13 September.
The bills are filed by Nueva Ecija 2nd District Rep. Micaela Violago, PBA Partylist Jericho Jonas Nograles, Pangasinan 3rd District Rep. Rose Marie “Baby” Arenas, Parañaque 2nd District Rep. Joy Myra Tambunting, Laguna 3rd District Rep. Sol Aragones and Batangas 6th District Rep. Vilma Santos-Recto.
The panel has failed to tackle said bills during the first regular session of the 18th Congress which ended last 3 October.
