Soon your computer will be able to help you avoid a ticket from the fashion police.

A research team from the University of Austin has developed an artificial intelligence app that can look at a photo of an outfit and suggest improvements.

The system called Fashion++ analyzes the color, pattern, texture and shape of garments and suggests several tweaks for the user based on more than 10,000 images of outfits shared publicly on fashion enthusiast sites.

The challenge for the creator of the tool was finding less-fashionable outfits and training the system to detect them using as basis fashionable outfits.

“As fashion styles evolve, the AI can continue to learn by giving it new images, which are abundant on the internet,” one of the designers said. “We thought of it like a friend giving you feedback.”

“It’s also motivated by a practical idea: that we can work with a given outfit to make small changes so it’s just a bit better.”

The system is not yet for rollout but the concept will be presented at the upcoming International Conference on Computer Vision in Seoul, South Korea.

The developers said vintage vintage looks may stump Fashion++ because the training images they’ve used are from the 1990s onwards since the Internet exploded into the scene.

“We are examining the interaction between how a person’s body is shaped and how the clothing would suit them. We’re excited to broaden the applicability to people of all body sizes and shapes by doing this research,” Grauman said.
