Don’t look now, but Senator Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go on Monday revealed that President Rodrigo Duterte has ordered Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Police General Oscar Albayalde to take his terminal leave.
This comes after the PNP chief announced his resignation during the PNP flag ceremony.
In a statement, Go disclosed that Duterte had asked Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Eduardo Año to tell Albayalde to take his terminal leave, saying that the Interior secretary had an intimate conversation with the President after the Cabinet meeting on Friday.
“The President told Año to advise Albayalde to take a leave, but it’s not considered an early retirement,” said Go. “Maybe you can call it as a terminal leave, which means that you are on leave up until your retirement.”
The senator also noted that Albayalde earlier told Año during that time that he will relinquish his post before his mandatory requirement to give the President the leeway in choosing the next PNP chief.
Go stressed that the President was aware of Albayalde’s resignation as the PNP chief’s letter was sent to the Palace on Sunday night, which stated that Albayalde has informed the President that he wanted to relinquish his post as PNP chief until his compulsory retirement.
The President also wanted the PNP to “buckle down to work” after the organization was dragged into the controversy of some rogue cops and the senator also assured that the President will not spare anyone who will be found liable in the said drug controversy even if it involves Albayalde.
