Handsewn barongs embellished with x-rays, plastic straws, soda can pull tabs and straw strings. An organza terno adorned with soft loofa sponge materials. A New Look-inspired outfit fashioned from old neckties and bowties. Clothing labels and care tags stitched in a piña jusi cocktail terno. A draped dress made fancy with hand painted and varnished popsicle sticks.

It was pure “Alchemy” during the recent Slim’s Fashion & Arts School Best of Student Work Exhibit 2019 at SM Megamall’s Mega Fashion Hall, when students approached this year’s “Upcycling” theme with their trademark creativity combined with significant execution skills.

A joint project of Slim’s Fashion & Arts School and SM, this year’s theme involved the idea of taking something with little or no value and transforming it into something beautiful or something or more value. The result was pure fashion magic!

The upcycling theme was also evident in the set–up of brown boxes made stylish with fashion sketches conceptualized and drawn by the students.

This is the fifth year that SM and Slim’s have collaborated on this annual event which showcases works that are part of the students’ exams. All the clothes on exhibit were designed and constructed by the students themselves within a limited time frame.

Founded in 1960, Slim’s Fashion & Arts School is the most established fashion institution in the country. Included in its long list of notable alumni are Joe Salazar, Cesar Gaupo, Michael Cinco, Joey Samson, Chito Vijandre and Albert Andrada.
