Kings, Hotshots clash

Ginebra and Magnolia add another chapter in their storied rivalry when they clash in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Governors’ Cup Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Action starts at 7 p.m. with the Kings looking to improve its 3-2 win-loss record while the Hotshots are seeking to snap its back-to-back setbacks in this season-ending conference.

Prior to that, San Miguel Beer welcomes the addition of Mo Tautuaa when it battles Columbian in the 4:30 p.m. first game.

After beating the Beermen in their previous game, 129-124, the Kings would be marching with high morale as Justin Brownlee, Stanley Pringle and LA Tenorio are all eager to come up with a strong follow up to their impressive performance.

Brownlee delivered big numbers of 28 points, 14 rebounds and 14 assists while Pringle notched 27 points, six rebounds and six assists and Tenorio added 19 markers to underscore the Kings’ brilliant display of offensive prowess.

Ginebra coach Tim Cone said their firepower would be put into test against Magnolia, the squad that serves as their bitter rival for the past couple of decades.

“It’s going to be a big game for us. To play San Miguel and Magnolia in back-to-back games is an incredible challenge,” said Cone, who would also coach the men’s basketball team in the 30th Southeast Asian Games.

“We would like to keep the momentum from the San Miguel game and move into another. We got a rest for a week and we’re coming in fresh and prepared.”

The game is also equally important to Magnolia, which fashions a 3-3 mark and is looking to bounce back after suffering twin setbacks, including an 89-95 decision to Blackwater.

With import Romeo Travis riding the bench due to injury, the Hotshots banked in Paul Lee and Ian Sangalang, who delivered 26 and 12 points, respectively, as well as Rome dela Rosa, who chipped in 11 markers.

Magnolia coach Chito Victolero said Travis looks fit and ready to play.

“He’s better now. He can now walk again. We expect him to play on Sunday,” he said.

Meanwhile, Phoenix tapped NBA veteran Alonzo Gee as import to replace Eugene Phelps.

Gee, a 10-year pro from Alabama, is coming in overflowing with experience after suiting up for the Washington Wizards, San Antonio Spurs, Cleveland Cavaliers, Denver Nuggets, Portland Trail Blazers and New Orleans Hornets in the NBA.

He already attended his first practice and would make his debut when Phoenix clashes with Columbian Dyip on Friday.
