Jasmine Curtis-Smith, will co-star with Iza Calzado and Meryll Soriano in “Culion.”
Coco Martin will direct and produce "3Pol Trobol" starring Jennylyn Mercado.
A fresh pairing and familiar names dominate the list of actors who are scheduled to headline the eight films competing for this year’s edition of the annual Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF).
As revealed Wednesday, 16 October, the last four films that complete the list are “Mindanao,” “3Pol Trobol: Huli Ka Balbon,” “Culion” and “Write About Love.”
Jennylyn Mercado will be directed by her co-star Coco Martin in “3Pol Trobol.” Both have been MMFF mainstays for the past few editions. They will be joined by another festival favorite, Ai-Ai de las Alas. Martin produces and directs the film under his real name Rodel Nacianceno for his production outfit CCM Film Productions.

Another fresh pairing features new names in the festival. Rocco Nacino and Miles Ocampo play scriptwriters in Crisanto Aquino’s directorial debut for TBA Studios’ “Write About Love.”
Rocco’s soon-to-be screen partner in the anticipated TV adaptation of “Descendants of the Sun,” Jasmine Curtis-Smith, will co-star with Iza Calzado and Meryll Soriano in “Culion.” Penned by Ricky Lee and directed by Alvin Yapan, the film tells the story of three best friends afflicted with leprosy and living in isolation in the island paradise of Culion in the 1940s.
Another drama contender is Judy Ann Santos’ “Mindanao.” The actress recently made waves at the Busan Film Festival with her portrayal of a Muslim woman in the Brillante Mendoza film.
These films were chosen out of the list of finished films submitted to the committee.
Four other entries were named earlier based on submitted scripts.
These include “Mission Unstapabol: The Don Identity” starring Vic Sotto and Maine Mendoza; “The Mall, The Merrier” featuring Vice Ganda and Anne Curtis; the remake of the hit Korean film “Miracle in Cell No. 7” starring Aga Muhlach and Bela Padilla and “Sunod” starring Carmina Villaroel. The latter film replaced Kris Aquino’s “(K)Ampon.”
The annual filmfest opens on Christmas Day, 25 December, and runs for two weeks, showing only these films in all Metro Manila cinemas.
