TACLOBAN CITY — A suspected New People’s Army (NPA) rebel was killed in the latest of a series of military encounters in the region on Saturday morning in a remote village in Las Navas town, Northern Samar.
Maj. Gen. Pio Diñoso, commanding general of the 8th Infantry Division, told the media that the dead rebel was still holding his M-1 rifle when it was recovered by pursuing soldiers.
Diñoso said government troops from the 20th Infantry Battalion were in pursuit of the rebels it encountered the previous day when the NPA group was chanced upon in Barangay Sag-od, the remotest village of Las Navas town.
He added that the encounter in Barangay Sag-od is the 10th between the military and the NPA within the week as the military escalated its campaign to run after the remaining armed communist rebels in Eastern Visayas.
“This is the military pressure that we are giving to the NPA. We expect more military encounters in the following weeks,” he said.
