Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Police General Oscar Albayalde relinquished his post Monday following his involvement in the Senate investigation on the alleged “ninja cops” issue.

Albayalde said that he will step down from his post immediately and will go on a non-duty status.

“After careful thought and deliberation, I have come to the decision to relinquish my post as Chief, PNP effective today and go on a non-duty status,” he said on a statement.

He added that he already submitted a letter of intent to Interior and Local Government (DILG) Sec. Eduardo Ano, who accepted his decision and endorsed it to President Rodrigo Duterte.

The PNP Chief thanked the officials of the PNP for their dedication to the service and imparted his last command to “carry on in the service of our fellow Filipinos so that all of us may live and work in peace.”

Albayalde said that he made the decision to pave way for the appointment of his replacement as he will compulsory retire on 8 November.

Lt. Gen Archie Gamboa will take over the PNP as officer-in-charge until Duterte appoints a new police chief.
